THE HIGH TECH SURGERY OF
DR AMANDA BIDDLE
On Tuesday 9 January 2007 an opening party was held to
launch a new Specialist Dental Practice in Emsworth.
Mr David Barnard CBE, retired Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeon at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth,
formally opened the Practice.
Dr Amanda Biddle, who is a Specialist dentist in
Periodontics (gum problems) and Oral Surgery,
including implant treatment, heads up the team. Amanda
is an Emsworth resident who qualified from Guy’s Dental
School, London, in 1987 and then underwent 4 years of
Oral Surgery Hospital training.
She passed her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the
Royal College of Surgeons in 1991. She subsequently
worked in general dental practice, the community dental
service and the pharmaceutical industry before returning
to Guy’s to complete her training in Periodontics.
She obtained her Masters degree and Membership in
Restorative Dentistry and is now registered on two
specialist lists. Amanda teaches at Guy’s and until
recently has provided her referral service from a general
dental practice in Emsworth, Amanda said,
‘This is a much needed service as there are few such
practices around outside London. Gum disease is the
commonest cause of tooth loss in adults. The disease is
preventable and treatable. Local doctors and dentists refer
patients to me and the demand for treatment lead to the
decision to set up this new centre.
The latest equipment is evident and treatments are carried
out in a relaxed but hi-tech environment. In fact the
building itself is of historical interest as it dates from
around 1800 and is grade 2 listed. The main surgery is in
the old stable – very appropriate around Christmas-time.
The hayloft was above with servant’s quarters on the other side of the building. Upstairs is now a lovely hygienist surgery. The whole conversion has been done in a very sympathetic manner retaining as many of the old features as possible.’ Amanda’s current team consists of herself, and her dental specialists, nurses, hygienists, receptionist and practice manager. Additional local specialists and consultants in other dental fields will visit, as required. The opening was attended by local dentists, doctors, family and friends. It was an informal evening with champagne and buffet. Amanda said, ‘The atmosphere was relaxed and happy and I am sure this practice will be a real asset to our area.’
